In our area, a large fraction of the American houses use wood and include light-frame construction. Increasingly popular alternative construction materials include insulating concrete forms (foam forms filled with concrete) and structural insulated panels (foam panels faced with oriented strand board or fiber cement). More recently, builders have begun to collaborate with structural engineers who use computers and high tech stuff to design prefabricated constructions. The houses look really great, but I'm not sure if they can oppose the "tooth of time". Check out these nice pix right
