Gérardmer is a fair-sized ski resort in the Vosges. It isn't quite as high or as extensive as La Bresse, but Gérardmer does boast the longest piste in the Vosges (the 4km long Chevreuils.) The resort covers 40km of pistes on 2 thickly forested hills above the eponymous town. The close spacing of the trees restricts off-piste, though 100km of cross country ski trails at Gérardmer can be explored from here and the nearby, minor, resort of Xonrupt-Longemer.

The city is first mentioned in historical documents dating from 1148. By 1240 Offenburg had already been declared a Free Imperial City. The city was nearly totally destroyed in the Nine Years War. In 1803 Offenburg lost its status as a Free City and fell under the rulership of the Grand Duchy of Baden.

During the outbreak of the Revolutions of 1848, the "Offenburger Program" which contained thirteen demands "in the name of the people of Baden" was announced at the Salmen Inn on 12 September 1847. This was the first democratic demand in Germany. Along with the Karlsbad Resolves, the Offenburger Program demanded basic and human rights as well as freedom of the press and a progressive income tax structure. On 19 March 1848 the demands were confirmed by the 20,000 member Offenburg Peoples' Assembly.

Should be an easy dish, I have these little animals in massive numbers (snails are hermaphroditic, so of course they reproduce like crazy) in my garden and I have an eternal supply (and re-supply) of Alsace wines in the region. Some American consumers find the thought of escargot somewhat disconcerting, as snails are not associated with food in the United States, but in France and other European countries they are a delicateness ☺☺

De Elzas, een prachtige streek !

Vooraf hadden we natuurlijk al veel gelezen en veel positiefs gehoord over de Elzas, de Vogezen, het Zwarte Woud en heel het gebied (met micro-klimaat) ertussen en het moet gezegd, na slechts enkele verkenningen kunnen we steevast ja-knikken op de vraag of het hier wel zo mooi is. Het intens zachte herfstweer en het enig mooie kleurenpallet dat de natuur dezer dagen tentoonspreidt maken dat gevoel, die belevenis nog sterker waardoor we ervan overtuigd zijn dat we nog heel vaak onderweg zullen zijn "on the Alsace roads".

The name of Strasbourg – meaning “town at the crossing of roads” – is of Germanic origin: “stras,” from Strasse (street), and “burg,” from town or citadel. It is an enchanting historic place in the Alsace region of France and a city of contrasts: the language is French, but the architecture, food and wine are mostly German as, over the centuries, Alsace changed back and forth between French and German hands.

It is the home town of Johann Gutenberg, inventor of the printing press and birthplace of the French national anthem (“la Marseillaise”). Le cascade et le chateau du Nideck (Oberhaslach)

C'est le poète allemand Chêne von Chamisso qui immortalisa les lieux avec son récit légendaire des " Géants du Nideck ". Quel beau cadre en vérité pour un récit romantique ! Tout y est : de sombres forêts, des rocs titanesques, une superbe cascade, et l'on devine aisément la présence de quelque belle ondine...

C’est dans un ouvrage des frères Grimm que l’on trouve une des légendes du Nideck. Un château était habité par un couple de géants et leur fille qui, un jour, découvrit la plaine d’Alsace où elle rencontra pour la première fois des humains. En rentrant, son père lui apprit ce qu’étaient les hommes et leur fonction : travailler la terre pour nourrir les géants.

Colmar, "Capital of Alsatian Wine" (capitale des vins d'Alsace)

Colmar is the home town of the painter and engraver Martin Schongauer and the sculptor Frédéric Bartholdi, who designed the Statue of Liberty. The city is renowned for its well preserved old town, its numerous architectural landmarks and its museums, among which is the Unterlinden Museum.

It was founded in the 9th century. This was the location where Charles the Fat held a diet in 884. Colmar was granted the status of a free imperial city of theHoly Roman Empire in 1226. In 1575, the city adopted the Protestant Reformation, long after the northern neighbours of Strasbourg and Sélestat. During the Thirty Years' War, the city was taken by the armies of Sweden in 1632, who held it for two years. The city was conquered by France under Louis XIV in 1673.

In 1679 (Treaties of Nijmegen) Colmar was ceded to France. With the rest of Alsace, Colmar was annexed by the newly formed German Empire in 1871 as a result of the Franco-Prussian War. It returned to France after World War I, was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1940, and then reverted to French control after the battle of the "Colmar Pocket" in 1945. Colmar has been continuously governed by conservative parties since 1947, the Popular Republican Movement (1947–1977), theUnion for French Democracy (1977–1995) and the Union for a Popular Movement (since 1995), and has had only three mayors during that time.

The Colmar Treasure, hidden during the Black Death, was discovered here in 1863.

The "cohesion day @ work" brought us to a fortress, located on a hill near the town of Mutzig. The German construction (Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II) dominates the area and allowed to block access to the plain of Alsace to the French troops in case of attack. This "new" generation fort is built with concrete, armoured and equiped with power stations ; it is THE prototype of the modern XXth century splited fortification. About 7000 men were needed to run this huge defensive ensemble of 628 acres. It was a very interesting tour by an even more enthusiastic tour-guide.

It was my good old friend, Tom who invited me to join his closest family (his brother, sister and brother in law and his adorable mum) for a very special event : "Cars & Coffee", which is basically a random collection of people and cars who gather at the local coffee shop.

The whole show, which finds its origin in California, is very informal and a brilliant idea if you want to dream away among some really exotic cars. The biggest surprise was the unique opportunity Tom's family gave me to drive their Ferrari F360 Modena. That was absolutely mind-freaking awesome ; I had goose bumps for a whole week !!! An experience I never, ever will forget !! Thanks Tom, Marc & Teresa (love you all) !!

While bike commuting from Rockville towards Landover (one way : +/- 30 miles or 50 km), I pass several iconic landmarks (among others ; the White House) but also, two enormous stadiums with a glorious history : RFK (Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium) and FedEx Field (originally Jack Kent Cooke Stadium). I always feel very humble when I cycle next to these gigantic arena and it remembers me of the kind of appeasement back in the old Roman days ... "bread and circuses" (Panem et Circenses) ...

The Maryland Heights Trail

When you reach the top of the mountain, a side trail winding through the woods leads you to the spectacular overlook of two rivers and three states. Telkens ik even in de heimat ben, word ik ondergedompeld in die authentieke Belgische gezelligheid en die unieke 'savoir vivre' levensstijl. Amerika is een prachtig land en de 'sky' mag er dan wel de 'limit' zijn, gezelligheid is voor de meeste van hen een onbekend begrip. Hun motto is 'live to work' wat net omgekeerd is bij ons. Ik weet het, Belgen zijn onvervalste navelstaarders, maar genieten van het leven (zoveel als mogelijk) staat keihoog in ons vaandel, niet ?

The Manassas Battlefield Bull Run hike ... tremendous !

The Manassas Battlefield Park is steeped in history. The site of two major civil war battles encloses many historic points of interest, including the spot where confederate General Thomas Jackson got his nickname 'Stonewall Jackson'. Brigadier General Barnard E. Bee, trying to rally his troops, pointed to General Thomas J. Jackson's line where the cannons now stand, and shouted 'There stands Jackson like a stone wall! Rally behind the Virginians!' From this point, we walked past to the cannons and line of trees where the main section of the blue blazed First Manassas Trail loop starts. A great hike (5.3 miles) in a wonderful natural and historic setting ; highly recommended to everyone !!

Signal Knob is the northern peak of Massanutten Mountain in the Ridge and Valley Appalachians with an elevation of 2,106 feet (642 m). It is located in George Washington National Forest in Shenandoah County and Warren County in Virginia. The peak offers expansive views into the northern Shenandoah Valley and the town of Strasburg, Virginia. Signal Knob was used by Signal Corps in the American Civil War by both the Union and Confederate armies.

Het USA avontuur loopt bijna op z'n einde ... so what is next ?

Vrij onverwacht kregen we heel recent te horen dat een job bij het EUROCORPS in Strasbourg (FR) tot de mogelijkheden behoorde. Diegenen die ons kennen weten dat we niet vies zijn van een nieuwe challenge en dus was de keuze bliksemsnel gemaakt ondanks het feit dat we zeker niet afkerig waren tegen een terugkeer naar onze stek aan zee. Het vooruitzicht van dagelijks 4 à 5 uur in het verkeer aan te schuiven richting Brussel zag ik helemaal niet zitten. Dus ... Vive la France, Vive l'Alsace, Vive Strasbourg.

En om ons wat voor te bereiden reden we vorig weekend (+/- 85 miles) naar Strasburg in Shenandoah County (Virginia) om alvast wat in de stemming te komen.

Het begon alweer serieus te kriebelen ... de fietsmicrobe bedoel ik dan ;o)

Aangename dagtemperaturen konden me zonder al te veel moeite verleiden om de koersfiets vanonder zijn winterdekentje te halen. Beentjes scheren, bandjes oppompen en juu, weg voor één van mijn lievelingsritten (ca. 70 km) naar Georgetown via allerlei bike trails. Sooo nice !!

Er zijn zo van die plaatsen op de wereld die je oneindig vaak kan bezoeken en toch allesbehalve saai zijn/worden. Capitol Hill en bij uitbreiding, de National Mall, zijn zo'n locaties. Indrukwekkende trekpleisters die we nooit ofte nimmer zullen vergeten. We hebben er ook aardig wat foto's getrokken, zowat iedere maand van het jaar en dan zie je duidelijk hoe de natuurlijke kleuren en het lichtspectrum wijzigen wat het allemaal nog spectaculairder maakt. Een heuse Belgische Brasserie in hartje New York City : " MARKT "

Hoeveel geluk moet een mens hebben om na een kilometer of 12 te hebben gewandeld in hartje NYC, bijna totaal

verschrompeld van de dorst, plots en totaal onverwacht terecht te komen bij een fata morgana van Belgische lekkernijen ? Gigantisch véél pietttt !! Bovendien bleek deze op en top Belgische Brasserie helemaal geen hallucinatie of onrealistisch hersenspinsel, neen, (de) MARKT ligt op een hoek op 676 6th Avenue (Flatiron District) en is een druk bezochte Bourgondische bakermat met tal van overheerlijke Belgische culinaire specialiteiten en een immens aanbod van onze wereldvermaarde bieren. Deze brasserie is gegarandeerd de beste ambassadeur voor ons land aan de US East Coast ; de menukaart in foutloos Nederlands en Frans (+ Engels in het cursief), een stukje Belgische geschiedenis afgebeeld in verscheidene originele lijsten, een vleugje poëzie op een centrale plaats aan de muur, authentiek Belgisch meubilair (de "comptoir" heeft zeker nog ergens in het Brusselse nachtleven dienst gedaan) en een barman (hoewel geen Belg) die van wanten weet. Kortom, geen wonder dat deze stek een mega hype is in the Big Apple !!

Another walk in the park ...

Eén van de locaties in onze regio waar we heel vaak aan zullen terugdenken is het prachtige natuurgebied langsheen het Chesapeake - Ohio (C&O) Canal. We hebben er niet alleen vaak gefietst (het is trouwens een flink stuk van mijn 'bike to work commute'), maar wij zijn er ook regelmatig (en in alle seizoenen) gaan 'hiken'. Het geeft alleszins een raar gevoel als je stilaan begint te beseffen dat alles wat de laatste maanden nog gaan doen in de States, mogelijk wel eens voor de laatste keer zou kunnen zijn. We staan er gelukkig niet (al) te veel bij stil ...

De National Zoo in Woodley Park biedt onderdak aan meer dan 2000 dieren. De dierentuin ligt in een prachtig park en is erg populair bij gezinnen. De meeste bezoekers komen voor de twee reuzenpanda’s, die sinds 2000 samen met hun jong Tai Shan te leen zijn van China.

Afgelopen zondag was het heel zonnig en vrij zacht qua temperaturen, ideale omstandigheden om in de Zoo rond te kuieren en te ontdekken wat de meeste beestjes doen tijdens de winter. De otter genoot mateloos van de zonnestralen terwijl hij wat nummertjes opvoerde als opwarmertje voor de Super Bowl die avond. Héél grappig !

We waren er al vaker met de wagen langs gereden ; er eens gezellig de buurt verkennen was er nog steeds niet van gekomen, tot afgelopen zondag ... wijllie met de Metro naar Dupont Circle, één van de referentiepunten in DC en een cosmopolitische buurt die erg in trek is bij homo's en vooral gekend is om z'n schitterende,

oude maar zeer stijlvolle woningen. Het was er heel gezellig en ik had (voor een keer) erg veel ... aantrek ... amai seggg☺☻

FN Herstal has successfully equipped generations of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines all over the world. Their solid reputation and outstanding quality of firearms (and line up items) has been picked up in the recent past by the US Special Operations Command (SOCCOM) as they ordered the SCAR (SpecOps Combat Assault Rifle). Thanks to a very good relationship with and the great support of FNH USA, I was able to organize a demo event at their facilities in Fredericksburg, VA. What can I say ... another memorable landmark during my term of duty in the States (which will come to an end in August).

Het moest en zou er eens van komen : een beklijvende basketmatch in de NBA bijwonen en dus trokken we op Nieuwjaarsdag met 3 enthousiaste cheerleader "assessors" naar de thuisbasis van de Washington Wizards : the Verizon Center.

Tegenstanders waren de New Orleans Hornets, waar "onze" Belgo-Congolees : Didier Mbenga tegenwoordig (na bijna 3 seizoenen LA Lakers) z'n dollars binnenrijft.

Didier liep wel rond op het terrein, maar hij was schijnbaar z'n sportoutfit vergeten ...

Wat de wedstrijd betreft was het eigenlijk best wel aardig om naar te kijken. De gameplay was boeiend en gelijk opgaand. De sfeer zat er ook meteen in en er werd alles aan gedaan om dit zo te houden.

Een heuse show met - hoe kan het ook anders - op tijd en stond een stevige portie reclame. Het laatste quarter was er echter teveel aan voor de Wizards want veel magie was er niet meer te zien. De Hornets schakelden even in een hogere versnelling en de Wizards stonden erbij en keken ernaar ; eindstand 81 - 92.

Voor wie houdt van geschiedenis én het laatste nieuws, is het Newseum in Wash DC een absolute must. Op 250.000 vierkante meter worden vijf eeuwen nieuwsgeschiedenis op een zeer dynamische en interactieve manier weergegeven.

Wereldbepalende gebeurtenissen zoals de val van de Berlijnse Muur en 9/11 krijgen er extra aandacht. In aparte hoeken van het Newseum zie je hoe verslaggevers wereldwijd hebben bericht over deze gebeurtenissen.

Heel Amerikaans is de Journalists Memorial, een constructie in glas van twee platen waarin de namen van 1913 journalisten zijn geëtst, die sinds 1837 zijn omgekomen terwijl zij verslag uitbrachten. Ook de naam van de Nederlandse RTL-camerman Stan Storimans, die tijdens zijn werk in Georgië om het leven kwam, vind je op deze indrukwekkende muur.

Er zijn zo van die avonden ...

Een etentje onder vrienden, uit alle windstreken van België, die mekaar hier hebben leren kennen. Het kondigt zich aan als een rustige, leuke aangelegenheid waarbij de klemtoon (hoe kan het ook anders) ligt op het culinaire vlak.

De shwung (dankzij den Bublé ;o) zit er echter meteen in en de avond draait uit op een supergezellige samenkomst die uiteraard nog lang in ons geheugen zal blijven nagalmen (ondanks de massa's asperines 'the day after'). Dee, you rock man .. and the rest too !

Bublé was Hot, Hip and Hunky !

He is not only a great singer, but also a wonderful performer. He sang with spirit & passion and made this such a memorable performance. He sang every song from the heart and had so much energy ; it was simply infectious. Indeed, vocally it is wonderful, but it is his relating to the audience throughout the show that makes it feel like one of the fastest concerts we have ever attended. A full arena of people and yet it still managed to feel like a smaller more intimate venue. Yes, the show starts off with a bang, literally, but it's not the showiness that made this concert so great. It, quite simply, was the performance itself. All the parts: the opening act, Naturally 7, Michael Bublé, and, of course, the phenomenal band that backs him up. If you really love music, and not over processed music, but TRUE music from performers who have true musical talent you need to do yourself a favor and see his show. We had a wonderful evening and it was great to see such a mixed audience, too !

Ook hier is de Kerstperiode een vrij commerciële bedoening waarbij (alweer) alles in "sales" wordt aangeboden. Nu ja, de economie moet draaien en liefst in overdrive want de recente crisis heeft al voor bijzonder veel doffe ellende gezorgd bij talrijke gezinnen in de States. Carine laat 't niet aan haar hartje komen en winkelt er ongebreideld op los. Mijn motto : "kijken zoveel ze wilt, kopen zoweinig ik wil" ... maar het baat allemaal geen sikkepit ... haar leuze is immers (en overigens ook die van de winkeliers) : "the more you spend, the more you safe" ... dus ... daar gaan mijn kostenbeheersende goede huisvader bedoelingen !!

The guy who is going to replace me mid 2011, Johan, was shortly in WDC. It was an excellent opportunity to get acquainted and to get introduced (he has never been in the States before) to a brand new environment. If he still had 0,1 % of doubts being moved to the Nation's capital, they're all gone now (that were exactly his own words !). Good luck with your preps, dude !!

The Flying to Belgium maneuver ...

Initially announced as a comfortable flight to Belgium with the Falcon, finally turned out as a more adventurous undertaken with the so called work horse of the Air force, the good old C-130 Hercu. It took us more than 2 days to get there (with an overnight in Goose Bay, CAN) but that didn't hamper the joy of being home among family and friends. The first couple of days, I stayed at Yves ' place and met all the buddies. By the way, the pub crawl in Oostende was super cool. The last couple of days, I stayed with my family and met more friends.

Thank you all very much for the pleasant talks,

the wonderful moments, the many drinks and the inexhaustible supply of mouth watering Belgian food. Can't wait to meet you all again, but it won't be long now, I promise !!! The return flight to the US (Andrews AFB, Maryland) took place with the Airbus A-310, which did its very last transatlantic cross over for the Belgian Defense. Ain't that something unique ??

Three of the first five US presidents made their homes in Virginia : Thomas Jefferson in Monticello, James Monroe in Ash Lawn-Highland and James Madison in Montpelier. They were three good friends and practically neighbors. During Jefferson's presidency, Madison served as a Secretary of State, while Monroe negotiated the Louisiana purchase as Ambassador to France. Under Madison, Monroe served as Secretary of State and Secretary of War (cumulation of both these functions is still unique in American history).

After we visited the houses of George Washington (Mount Vernon), Lincoln (DC), Eisenhower (Gettysburg), Truman (Key West), Obama (White House), our presidential house visit counter is momentarily on 8.

Spectacular views from the Washington Memorial

The Washington Memorial is without any doubt one of the most iconic landmarks in Washington, District of Columbia. It was build to honor the Father of the Country, George Washington, first President of the United States (1789 - 1797). The obelisk, constructed in several stages, is made from marble, granite and sandstone and measures 555.5 feet (170 m.).

Dan Brown chose the Washington Memorial as the key building in his book "the Lost Symbol". Reasons enough for me to bring a special visit to the world's tallest masonry structure, unsupported by steel ... By the way, the views over Washington DC (and 3 states) from the observatory are magnificent ! Check it out HERE.

Golf clinic by David Leadbetter

It was legendary golf instructor, David Leadbetter who introduced me (and a few others ...) into the precision club and ball sport. Like so many people, I thought that playing golf couldn't be that complicated. Well, I thought wrong ... You have to master the swing in order to get some result. You have to generate tremendous power by coiling the upper body with a big shoulder turn. The hips, however, don't turn nearly as much. This creates tension and torque, not unlike a rubber band being stretched before it's let go. Easier said than done ... The playing area was the exclusive Donald Trump National Golf Club in Potomac Falls, VA.

San Francisco telt 0,75 Mio inwoners en ligt op een landtong die de Stille Oceaan scheidt van de Baai van San Francisco. De agglomeratie waarin San Francisco ligt, bestaat uit de steden San José, San Francisco, Oakland en Berkeley, die alle rond de Baai van San Francisco liggen. Met ruim 7 miljoen inwoners is het de op vier na grootste agglomeratie in de Verenigde Staten, alleen New York, Los Angeles, Chicago en Washington D.C.-Baltimore zijn groter. San Francisco is gebouwd op niet minder dan 43 heuvels.

De bekendste trekpleisters zijn de Golden Gate Bridge, de Transamerica Pyramid, de kabeltrams en uiteraard, Alcatraz (ook vaak "the Rock" genoemd). Alcatraz spreekt natuurlijk tot de verbeelding omdat allerlei top-gangsters/bandieten er achter slot en grendel werden opgeborgen, denk maar aan Al Capone en Robert Franklin Stroud (the Birdman). Oorspronkelijk was het echter een militaire vestiging als centrale baken in de kustverdediging. Door de jaren heen werd het veel te kostelijk om dit bouwwerk in stand te houden zodat het in 1972 onder beheer kwam van de US National Park Service.

California (Carmel / Big Sur) - dag 3

De kustroute, ten zuiden van Monterey, brengt ons via Carmel in Big Sur.

Carmel is min of meer te vergelijken met 't Zoute, maar dan op z'n yankees, t.t.z. een vrij discrete badplaats waar de meer bemiddelde Amerikaan zich komt tonen op de plaatselijke "place m'a tu vu" ...

Je vindt er schitterende "mansions" met een heel aparte, bijna sprookjesachtige architectuur. Ronduit knap.

Knap, sterker nog, héél knap is ook de natuur onderweg naar Big Sur ; een oneindige variëteit aan intense kleuren maken het grillige landschap in combinatie met de prachtige kustlijn betoverend en schilderachtig. In Big Sur heb je een aantal kunstminnende mini kolonies die zich langs de kustroute, aan de voet van de Santa Lucia Mountains, gevestigd hebben. In een ver verleden streken er allerlei al dan niet bekende kunstenaars en schrijvers neer. Er werden door de jaren heen heel wat filmopnames gemaakt en de Red Hot Chili Peppers zongen over Big Sur in hun single "Road Trippin" van 2000. Moest je er ooit eens in de buurt komen moet je er vast en zeker even halt houden !!

California (Monterey / Pebble Beach) - dag 2

Monterey is, naar Amerikaanse normen, een kleine stad met een vrij compact centrum. We kuierden er langsheen het "path of history" en ontdekten meteen de meeste bezienswaardigheden. De trekpleister is echter de "Fisherman's Wharf" met een hele reeks verleidelijke visrestaurantjes op één lange pier. Voor je erop wandelt passeer je echter een ganse meute "seals" die er alles

aan doen om de aandacht te trekken van de voorbijgangers. Hun penetrante lijfgeur moet je er wel bijnemen, tenminste als je de braakneigingen kan onderdrukken ...

De "17 mile drive at Pebble Beach" is een absolute must see. Op dit volledig afgezette privé schiereiland woont de lokale beau monde, een selecte groep super rijke gabbers die het volgens mij aardig naar hun zin hebben. Het gepeupel mag via één van de gates de "senic drive" afrijden, tenminste ... na het ophoesten van 9,50 dollar. Nadat ik mijn "military ID" toonde mocht ik (zoals op zoveel plaatsen overigens) gratis het domein van de rijke stinkerds betreden

Dit flink uit de kluiten gewassen jet-set staatje, is om allerlei redenen adembenemend mooi. Ik kan het met geen woorden beschrijven, superlatieven te kort, maar het is uniek en ... de "locals" zijn eigenlijk nog best aardig ook. We hebben allebei onze ogen de kost gegeven (tot tranens toe !) en intens genoten van het plaatselijke leven zoals we dat wellicht nooit meer zullen meemaken.

California (San Francisco / Monterey) - dag 1

21 Jul 2010 - Na een rechtstreekse vlucht van 5,5 uur vanuit Baltimore (BWI) bereiken we San Francisco rond de middag. Alles verloopt bijzonder vlot en even later staan we op Twin Peaks (2 heuvels van bijna 300m pal in het centrum van Frisco) en overschouwen we "Gold Rush City" ... bedolven onder een majestueus tapijt van hardnekkige mist. Geen getreur, we rijden verder naar het zuiden, richting zon en Monterey, waar we enkele dagen zullen verblijven. We houden even halt in het pittoreske Half Moon Bay voor een mega lekkere sandwich en cruisen dan verder naar Pigeon Point Light Station, een betrouwbare lichtbaken aan de rand van de Stille (merci Luc & Guy !) Oceaan.

Op deze rustige plek is er verrassend veel natuur te bewonderen, ideaal om hele mooie kiekjes te trekken. Helaas was het wat grijzig (en kil) die dag en was er van het gebruikelijke kleurenpalet die de omgeving siert, niet veel te merken. We hebben er wel een stevige dosis jodium in onze longen kunnen opsnuiven (wat ons deed denken aan ons geliefde Westende). In de late namiddag arriveren we via State Route 1 (the scenic drive ...) in Monterey, woonplaats van o.a. Frank Zappa.

The epilogue of our wonderful journey to New England...

Boston, hoofdstad van de staat Massachusetts (en New England) staat bol van de bezienswaardigheden ; het was de bakermat van de Amerikaanse Revolutie. De 4 kilometer lange "Freedom Trail" bracht ons langs alle historische plekken : Boston Common (het oudste publieke park in de States), the State House (Samuel Adams en Paul Revere legden er de 1ste steen in 1795), the Old South Meeting House (het grootste gebouw in de koloniale tijd), the Old State House (locatie van het 'Boston Massacre' in

1770), the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown

(de obelisk werd opgericht om de eerste belangrijke veldslag van de Revolutie te herdenken - een heroisch gevecht van Britse kolonisten tegen de Britse kroon en het machtige Britse Leger ; de heuvel zelf werd na de veldslag erkend als "sacred ground") en de USS Constitution (één van de oudste nog steeds varende oorlogsschepen ter wereld). Dit om maar enkele van de vele bezienswaardigheden te vermelden.

Boston is een zeer boeiende en bruisende stad en je kan er zonder problemen makkelijk een week verblijven. Helaas was onze tijd beperkt maar

desondanks hebben we er toch aardig van kunnen genieten (het schitterende weer heeft natuurlijk ook meegeholpen). In de late namiddag keerden we terug naar Newport, waar we aan de 'waterfront' er nog eens flink van genoten hebben. Gedurende onze 5-daagse trip hebben we in totaal iets van 'n 2.200km gereden, dat viel dus (naar Amerikaanse normen) reuze mee.

Nu is het uitkijken naar onze volgende 5-daagse trip. Eind Juli vliegen we naar San Francisco (California) en verblijven we in Monterey. Verslag hiervan later. Doei !!!

Tripping in New Jersey & New England (part 3)

Voor de fel geprezen "whale watching" ervaring in Cape Cod, verkozen we af te varen vanuit Provincetown (Massachusetts), het meest Noordelijk gelegen stadje (net geen 4.000 inwoners) aan de baai en ook de haven van waaruit de Stellwagen Bank (en dus ook de walvissen) het snelst te bereiken is. Het levendige stadje staat bekend omwille van z'n grote kunstminnende homo/lesbienne gemeeschap

en omwille van z'n prachtige stranden. Wij waren er natuurlijk om in eerste instantie de walvissen en dolfijnen te observeren en het moet gezegd, dit was een adembenemende, spectaculaire ervaring. Het feit dat je plots, uit het niets, deze mega joekels van zoogdieren uit de oceaan (letterlijk) ziet opduiken ... fenomenaal !!! Iedereen aan boord werd er zowaar muisstil van om nadien, met open mond en

bewonderende blik, te liggen waaawww-en. Dolfijnen die met je boot meezwemmen, walvissen die zich maar al te graag laten bewonderen, het is warempel een uniek spektakel. Om dit moois allemaal digitaal op je camera vast te leggen is ook een spektakel. Van de pakweg 100 foto's die ik er maakte zijn er slechts een 10-tal de moeite waard. Toch had ik het geluk aan mijn kant want ik maakte deze 2 schitterende "lucky

shots" (je ziet ze hier links). Buiten enkele dolfijnen zagen we enkele "humpback whales" (bultrugwalvis) en "finback whales" (vinviskaak walvis).

Tripping in New Jersey & New England (part 2)

Providence (RI), the creative capital, the city of innovation. That's in a few one-liners how one describes this place. The city center shows both classic architecture and new age buildings, but by far the most intriguing construction is the neoclassical Rhode Island State House, a kind of mini Capitol.

Our 'base of operations' for the next couple of days was the Navy Lodge in Newport (RI), home to miles of scenic coastline, ideal for rejuvenating walks and known for its lovely mansions. We adored the cosiness and hospitality at the wharfs, especially at

Bowen's Wharf. One could easily assume to be somewhere on the coast of Great Britain.

Late afternoon, everybody assembles on or around one of the many terraces for a bite to eat and a yummy drink, which was so nice and relaxing. We trully LOVEEEEEED it.

Relatively quick (and with a small portion of good luck), we found a great spot for dinner with a magnificent view on the Newport Harbor and a stupefying sunset. The seafood was ultra fresh and nicely served. Mmmmmmm ! We felled a lot of positive energy in Newport's buzzing downtown, a place we will never ever forget !!

Het stond al een hele poos fluogeel gemarkeerd op onze 'to visit list' en nu was het eindelijk zover ; van 23 tot 27 Jun trokken we op verkenning naar New England, via een korte tussenstop in New Jersey, want hier wilden we absoluut een bezoek brengen aan Ellis Island, bekend als grenspost voor nieuwe emigranten die zich eind 19de, begin 20ste eeuw wilden vestigen in de Verenigde Staten. Vermits Liberty Island er vlakbij ligt konden we niet anders dan ook het Vrijheidsbeeld eens van dichtbij te gaan bekijken.

Het bijna 50 meter hoge beeld was een geschenk van Frankrijk

t.g.v. het eeuwfeest van de Onafhankelijkheidsverklaring (en als teken van vrienschap). Het beeld is ontworpen door Gustav Eiffel en was initieel bedoeld om als vuurtoren te fungeren aan het Suezkanaal, maar Egypte zat op dat ogenblik wat krap bij kas en dus werd het aan de Amerikanen gegeven (1886).

Het krioelt er elke dag van de toeristen die er steevast met popcorn en een kuip cola rondslenteren. Van hier uit heb je natuurlijk ook een schitterend zicht op de skyline van Manhattan en 'the Big Apple'. 's Avonds zijn we met de Staten Island Ferry

naar NYC gevaren om er gezellig aan de waterkant te gaan tafelen in het poepchique Battery Gardens Restaurant. Tja, je leeft maar één keer, n'est-ce pas ? De volgende ochtend zijn we voor dag en dauw vertrokken naar Providence, de hoofdstad van Rhode Island en één van de allereerste Amerikaanse steden. Terloops misschien even vermelden dat de temperatuur overdag rond de 35 gr. C bedroeg ... Jihaaaa pffffffffff !!!

Aardig Belgisch gezelschap midden Washington DC

Het is altijd bijzonder aangenaam en héél leuk om nieuwe mensen te ontmoeten, zeker als het landgenoten zijn die beroepshalve ook in de regio DC verblijven. Belgen hebben in het algemeen niet veel nodig om een oergezellige avond in mekaar te boksen. Toch hadden Hélène & Demetreus alles uit de kast (euhh ... en de frigo ... en euhhhh ... de wijnkelder) gehaald om deze avond tot de weergaloosheid te verheffen, m.a.w. een avond om nog lang te koesteren. Nieuwe vriendschapbanden voor het leven werden gelegd en we zullen mekaar ongetwijfeld nog vaak treffen (het volgende RV is trouwens al gepland). Tot gauw !

"Time flies when you're having fun" is een wijs gezegde dat stilaan gevolgen zal hebben voor ons verblijf in de States. Inderdaad, onze "term of duty" van 3 jaar zit er bijna op zodat het hoog tijd was om ons grondig te beraden over onze (professionele) toekomst.

Een jaartje verlenging bekomen of weerhouden worden voor de functie van directeur Informatie Centrum Brugge zijn de opties die thans op tafel liggen. Voor laatst genoemde mogelijkheid werd ik op 25 Mei ll. uitgenodigd voor een gesprek in Brussel. Gelukkig was er een reeds lang geplande militaire vlucht zodat ik van 21 tot 26 Mei heel kort over en weer gevlogen ben.

Voorlopig is het spannend afwachten ...

We were invited at the Foreign Joint Services NCO Association's Annual Spring Ball on May 15th at Ft. Myer (Spates Club). Two co-workers of the BMSO are member of the executive board of this organization. Renzo is the Treasurer, Olivier is the FJSNA President.

Time to prepare our gala uniform and to polish our shoes ... It was a very nice evening, we met a lot of interesting people and we had shiploads of fun (to say nothing of the after party ...) !

Airshow @ Joint Base Andrews (MD)

On May 14th, we had the opportunity to see deadly flying machines (i.a. the F-22 Raptor) that travel faster than the eyes can follow, an amazing air show with aircraft moving in sinuous dips, dives and formations. The chance to see these steel birds is quite unique. Also, there was a lot of fascinating flying gear on display on the apron. Unfortunately, the US President's Boeing's 747-200B (Air-force 1), maintained at Joint Base Andrews, could not be observed.

Hiking in Rock Creek Park

This park, twice the size of Central Park in New York, is an extremely popular venue for jogging, cycling and hiking. Major parts are traffic free during the weekends which makes it an ideal location to enjoy the beautiful nature and wildlife. The Park - which is among the oldest of America's national parks - is patrolled by the US Park Police. For us (an a lot of other people) this park is one of the hidden jewels in the Wash DC region, not so far (20') from our place. We enjoyed quite a lot to walk around in this peaceful, green oasis.

Blitztrip naar familie en vrienden in België

We keken er geruime tijd heel erg naar uit en nu is het jammer genoeg alweer achter de rug ... Ons verblijf in het geliefde Vaderland was kort en krachtig (om maar eens een cliché te gebruiken), maar het weerzien met familie en vrienden was bijzonder intens. We zijn heel opgetogen over en dankbaar voor de bijzonder gastvrije ontvangst overal.

Uren en uren hebben we met de voeten onder de tafel gezeten en zoveel als mogelijk bijgepraat. Hierbij werden naar goede gewoonte de lekkerste hapjes, gerechtjes, drankjes, ... voorgeschoteld. "Neem toch nog een stukje van dit, drink nog een glaasje van dat ...", en dan zeggen (sommigen) dat overdaad schaadt : zever in pakskes !! ☺

Het samenzien van de "Kring der Zware Gevallen" hadden we op één avond/nacht voorzien (oef, gelukkig maar ;o). Geen kwantiteit, maar ... juist ja, geconcentreerde quality time. Ze waren met z'n allen op post en het werd een kei en kei hilarische avond/nacht, om nooit te vergeten. Er bestaan zelfs stiekem gedraaide video clips van ; klik HIER.

Mini-trip naar het Bourgondisch paradijs : België !

Ja, deze keer hebben we ons overvloedig laten gaan en hebben we intens genoten van de culinaire geneugdes (en geestrijke dranken) die België te bieden heeft. Soms simpel, soms frivool, maar steeds om duimen en vingers af te lekken.

Wat men ook moge zeggen, in de States is "uit eten" gewoonlijk je buikje vullen (en liefst zo snel mogelijk want hoe meer "fretters", hoe meer "tips") en komt er niet veel gezelligheid of lekker genieten aan te pas.

Catching a fresh sea breeze at Rehoboth Beach (DE)

Rehoboth Beach (Delaware, the First State) is a nice, charming little town on the Eastern Shore (Atlantic Ocean) within a 3 hours drive from our place, Rockville. The wooden beach boardwalk is very nice for strolling around and there are some very interesting, typical American bars, cremeries and diners. We really love this place, it reminds us so much of our 'natural' habitat in Belgium, Westende-Bad. Feel free to look at some pix and click HERE.

Nadat we ons gedurende een weekje flink konden onderdompelen in de tropische warmte van de Dominicaanse Rep. lijkt het nu wel pompen of verzuipen immers, de regen 'drascht' er met volle bakken uit. Wat een verschil met die stralende zon in Punta Cana (hoewel er ook af en toe een korte, maar soms krachtige plensbui uit de lucht viel). Best handig om in de winter, na amper 4 uur vliegen, van een pré-zomer te kunnen genieten ...

... ja, genieten, dat was ons credo gedurende ons verblijf in het super de luxe en fonkelnieuwe NH Royal Beach aan de Bavaro Beach. Superlatieven tekort om alles te omschrijven, maar om één van de belangrijkste (voor ons) te noemen : F&Z (*) waren grandioooooos, geen mega buffetten waar de caloriën vanaf druipen zoals je in de meeste resorts tegenkomt (pech voor de yanks natuurlijk) maar werkelijk een geraffineerde, kwaliteits- en stijlvolle keuken met heel veel vernieuwende gerechten. Drankjes waren ook super verzorgd en er werden enkel de gekende merken geserveerd. A propos, serveren ... wel ... chapeau voor alle opdieners, een uitstekende en ohhh zo vriendelijke service : schitterend !!!

De beach is adembenemend mooi (net als destijds in de Bounty reclames) en netjes onderhouden. Romantisch als we zijn, hebben we uren en uren met de voetjes in het water langs het strand gelopen (kwestie natuurlijk ook van wat vet pondjes te verbranden ☻). Zaaaallliiggg !!! Wat een contrast met nu, zelfs de regenwormen zijn op dit ogenblik aan het verzuipen en het einde is nog niet meteen in zicht. Gelukkig draaien we de klok vannacht 1 uur vooruit zodat we 60 volle minuten regen kunnen skippen, haha !!

Anyway, you find these nice, popular little squirrels everywhere on the outside while they are - most of their time - on a quest for food making the most awkward movements and jumps. Now, scientists believe an extraordinary evolution is occurring in squirrel population ... they are evolving from opportunist scroungers to farmers. Really, this is no joke !! They appear to be adapting their skills of burying nuts to other types of seeds and harvesting the resulting crop. Little plots of wheat, corn and sugar beet have been found in corners of allotments and waste ground. Landowners swear that families of squirrels have been seen hanging around these plots and appear to be picking out weeds. Scientists are observing the situation carefully and said that : "At this rate of evolution, we could see them moving into animal husbandry. Snail farms would be an obvious start. Exporting to France could be very lucrative for them. They could become self sufficient within a matter of a few years. It is fascinating."

No squirrels were available for comment but this guy found himself a nice piece of Papa John's pizza near the ice skating ring on the DC Mall. Bon appetit !!

Witnessing exquisite art, worth millions of dollars, for free

The National Gallery of Art (West Building) is one of our most preferable musea in the DC area. It houses and exposes fantastic collections of master paintings and sculptures, most of them donated by (very rich) American art collectors. Chester DALE (1883 - 1962) and his wife, Maud, were amongst the instigators of this fabulous gallery. Together they amassed (a part from their significant acquisitions of American art) one of the finest collections of late 19th and early 20th century European paintings. However, it was financier, art collector and philanthropist Andrew W. MELLON (in the mid 1920s, he was the 3th highest income tax payer in the USA, behind John Rockefeller and Henry Ford) who donated his huge art collection and a building to house a new museum (in the early 1940s, it was the largest marble structure in the world !). We find it truly marvelous to observe all these grandiose master pieces of art and we enjoy it every time again ... millions and millions of dollars of valued art, accessible for free. Matisse, Monet, Renoir, Cassatt, Modigliani, Degas, Cézanne, Manet, Boudin, Picasso, de Toulouse-Lautrec, da Vinci, Raphael, van Eyck, Vermeer, de Goya, van Gogh, Rembrandt, Hals, Rubens, Breughel, Botticelli, Rodin, etc. etc. ... name it and they have it ! Mass of Thanksgiving in Honor of Canonization of Saint Damien

A mass in celebration of the canonization of Saint Damien of Molokai (born : Jozef De Veuster) took place on Sunday, January 31, 2010 in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (Washington DC). The Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States, and held on World Leprosy Day. We fell like we had to be there, celebrating the Greatest Belgian ever and the only non-American with a statue on Capitol Hill. You can view the Mass HERE.

Last weekend, we had the opportunity to attend the annual Washington DC Auto Show. It was no surprise that a big part of the showroom floor was taken by the current and upcoming lineup of cars with green or greener technology. While this auto show is not known to be the first place that car constructors unveil their newest designs (that honor is usually reserved for Detroit and L.A.), there was nonetheless a very strong showing in alternative fuel and hybrid-electric models. The environmental benefits of hybrid vehicles versus "clean diesel" technology seems confusing, consider the fact that the 2010 "Green Car of the Year" is the Audi A3 TDI, competing against such vehicles as the Honda Insight hybrid, the Mercury Milan Hybrid, and the Toyota Prius.

The "Wissahickon" ... the what ???

The Great Falls of the Potomac are located west of Washington, DC and about 20 minutes from our habitat. The series of cascading falls has developed on the Potomac River in rocks formerly known as the Wissahickon formation.
The "Wissahickon" consists of resistant metamorphic rocks including schists, gneisses, metagraywackes and metaconglomerates. Indeed ... ! These rocks date from the late Precambrian and are about 750 million years old. The Falls formed when sea level dropped during the last Ice Age, causing the Potomac to downcut its valley.
I want to highlight that the term "Wissahickon Formation" is no longer used to designate rocks of this Precambrian series in Maryland.
The Great Falls are actually a series of cascades and rapids on a two-thirds of a mile stretch of the Potomac. The river drops about 76 feet over this distance.

Road tripping in the USA

It was a though decision and it was appealing to fly to some warm, exotic and luxurious place in the Caribbean for a lazy chilling vacation, but finally, we - the silent majority - decided to opt for another road trip vacation with our extreme fuel efficient little Pacifica tank. Hell yes, we're also in the United States to discover this great nation and to reveal its nicest places !! And thus, we choose to focus on the Northeastern region. We will stay (again) in Staten Island, New York, and visit Jersey City (New Jersey) and Long Island City (New York). Our next stop is gonna be New Port (Rhode Island) which will be our hub for visits to Cape Cod Bay, Barnstable Town, Providence, Pawtucket, Boston (Massachusetts) and Hartford (Connecticut). On our way back home we've planned to stay in Willow Grove (Pennsylvania) in order to explore Philadelphia (the parts we didn't visit the last time), Trenton and Wilmington. We're both looking forward to it !!

We keken er met z'n allen al een tijdje naar uit, maar tijdens de voorbije Eindejaarsperiode was het dan zo ver. Yves & Johan (aka Ike & Spinny) staken de grote plas over richting Washington DC. Ondanks de stilaan gekende winterperikelen was de transatlantische reis probleemloos verlopen (leve Air France !). De bittere koude kon bovendien niet verhinderen dat al de geplande uitstapjes netjes konden afgewerkt worden. Ik zet de meest memorabele even op een rijtje : bezoek aan the White House, the Capitol, the Library of Congress, the Terra Cotta Warriors exposition, the US Marine Corps Museum in Quantico (VA), the US Air & Space Museum in Dulles (VA), the Battlefield of Gettysburg (PA), the Mansion of former Pres. Eisenhower, the Naval Academy in Annapolis, the Inner harbour of Baltimore, ...

Het was kei gezellig, we hebben heel veel leute gehad, veel gezien ook en we hebben aardig wat kunnen bijlullen over vanalles en nog wat. Wat wil een mens nog meer ? Alleen, het was allemaal alweer zo snel voorbij ... wat duidelijk niet van de barre winter kan gezegd worden.

Intussen is het "business as usual" ... maar ... we tellen stiekem af naar onze volgende korte trip naar de zon : Peurto Rico ? Bahama's ? Turks and Caicos ? Wie zal 't zeggen ???? ☺☺

Snow blizzard covers the entire Washington DC area

There was a winter storm warning for our region and other parts of the Mid-Atlantic and it turned out to be a real snow blizzard. On the news, I heard that it is the biggest snowfall in six years. Right now, the surface is buried under a huge white blanket of easily 50 cm. The whole area is paralyzed but that didn't keep me at home. With my all wheel driven Chrysler Pacifica, it was so much fun to ride through this snow apocalypse. But I guess this cyclist had even more joy !The furniture and BBQ on our wooden deck is hidden under a gigantic load of snow flocks ... Looks nice though ! Hopefully, Yves & Johan won't have any problems to arrive here on Monday PM ...

Overlooking DC from the top of the Old Post Office tower

There is a rather uncomplicated way to have a pretty good overview of the city and that is the tower of the Old Post Office. It soars to 315 feet (about 100 meters), making it the third in height among the buildings in the Nation's Capitol. The Old Post Office also contains the century old tower clock and the Bells of Congress.

Being already more than 28 months in the Wash DC area, it is hard to find places that we did not visit so far. I think this blog shows and confirms this statement. However, occasionally, we run into a spot that we overlooked before. The site of Theodore Roosevelt Island, located in the Potomac river and part of the District of Columbia, is such a place. It is maintained as a natural park and features a statue of Th. Roosevelt (the 26th US President) in a memorial plaza. It is a very nice walk and an interesting spot to observe the fauna & flora. Alles wat je je maar kan indenken was overvloedig aanwezig in het exquise Valentin Imperial resort zodat we tenvolle hebben kunnen genieten van dit zomers intermezzo. No one pays a higher price for our freedom than members of our Nation's military and their families. As sons and daughters, husbands and wives, and mothers and fathers are deployed, military families endure with exceptional resilience and courage. They provide our troops with invaluable encouragement and love, and serve our Nation in their own right. During Military Family Month, we honor the families of our Armed Forces and thank them for their dedication to our country.

Though only a small percentage of our Nation's population, our troops bear the great responsibility of protecting our people. They, along with their families, serve us every day with courage and dignity. Ensuring that military families receive the respect they deserve and the support they have earned is a top priority for my Administration. The strength of our Nation is measured not just by our success on the battlefield, but also by our ability to support those families who have made so many sacrifices for us. Time and again, military families have shown their heart in the face of adversity. We have a solemn obligation to ensure that while our men and women in uniform discharge their duties, we do all we can to promote and preserve the well-being of their families. We must also support the families of our wounded warriors and our fallen heroes who have paid the ultimate price for the freedoms we enjoy.

A lot of people think that Halloween is something typical American, something invented for commercial purposes ... well ... they think defenitely wrong. In the good old colonial days, it were European immigrants who brought this Celtic tradition to the home of the brave and the land of the free. Ahaaaa !!

On the night of Oct 31, the Celts celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the gosts of the dead came back to earth. Booooohhhh ...

the American Grotto of Lourdes ...

Above the lovely valley of Emmitsburg, situated high on the Mountainside, where nature displays itself in all its wild and picturesque glory, sits the National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes, a shrine which traces its linage to the very beginnings of the spread of Catholicism in America. We were really amazed when we saw a sign on the highway with the exit "Grotto de Lourdes".

The Shrine is one of the oldest American replicas of the revered French shrine, dating to about two decades after the apparitions at Lourdes (1875), although the site had already been in use for more than seventy years as a place of prayer and devotion.
This holy mountain sanctuary of historic importance has been devoutly tended thought the years and attracts thousands of pilgrims from all parts of the world for prayer and meditation.

in our beloved home country, Belgium. But, to much is to much and thus, we arranged our next little and hopefully, sunny escape ... to Mexico. The Valentin Imperial Maya resort will soon be our temporary relax offering habitat ... Yes, we can !!

Soaring competition at Fairfield (Pennsylvania)

Baudouin Litt ("Baude" for the friends), a retired Belgian Air Force fighter pilot (Mirage V and F-16) and a former co-worker of the BMSO, has already, for many years, a rather remarkable hobby (or should I say, passion ?). He is an extremely talented glider or soaring pilot (Google his name to discover his achievements).

Carine and I were very interested by this "something out of the ordinary" and so we visited last Sunday, the Region 4 North Soaring competition at Fairfield (PA). About 40 glider pilots compete during a week for the Regional title on a different speed circuit. Spectacular moments were the launch and the low pass finishes. Baude competed with his own glider (tail sign "LBL").

Soaring offers a sense of freedom unique in sports. The intellectual challenge of soaring is its main appeal to many glider pilots. Gravity tells you that you and your machine, which together may weigh 500 to 2000 pounds, have no business staying aloft and that your place is on the ground since you have no engine to stay airborne. You know that the sun and the wind are providing an invisible force frequently far stronger than the force of gravity, but it's up to you to make the most of that force through your interpretation of it and of your own pilot skills. The best combination brings the longest flight, the highest altitude gain, or the fastest speed in a contest.

A Saint on Capitol Hill : Father Damien

On October 11, Pope Benedict XVI finally canonized the great Belgian (Flemish) missionary to Hawaii, Father Damien. He is one of two men representing that state Hawaii in the US Capitol in Washington DC and you can see his statue in Statuary Hall.

That Damien was chosen to represent Hawaii on Capitol Hill is no surprise. Although he worked in Hawaii before it became part of the United States, he has long been a hero to Hawaiians of all religious backgrounds. In the mid 19th century, Hawaii saw a large outbreak of leprosy, and the Hawaiian authorities responded by creating a leper colony at Kalaupapa on remote Molokai. Although this was not the intention of the Hawaiian government, the leper colony on Molokai soon became little more than a place people went to die, in isolation and poverty and a condition approaching anarchy. When the Bishop of Honolulu asked for a volunteer to go to Molokai to minister to the lepers for a few months, Damien went, and stayed for the rest of his 16 years. Damien cared for the lepers in every aspect of their being, cleansing their wounds and bandaging their sores, building coffins so they could have a decent burial (he built some 2,000 by hand), offering Mass and hearing their confessions, and attempting to model for them the love of Christ. He also brought some much needed order, building a home for children and organizing a variety of activities that helped bring hope and purpose to the people exiled on Kalaupapa. Damien identified completely with those in his care, referring to “we lepers” in his sermons long before he contracted leprosy himself. Damien’s example attracted other volunteers and more advanced medical care, so that slowly Kalaupapa was transformed for the benefit of those who lived there.
In fact, it is clear that what motivated Damien to do what no one else was willing to do was his desire to emulate Christ. Father Damien was “an ordinary man who made the most extraordinary moral choices again and again and again.”

The FLORIDA trip (part 3 and epilogue)

Onderweg naar onze eindbestemming (Key West), worden we door vreemde, buitenaardse krachten afgeleid naar Cape Canaveral, en dan meer bepaald naar het Kennedy Space Center. Als je in de buurt bent, is het eigenlijk wel een must om je er te laten rondleiden. Hier werd en wordt nog steeds geschiedenis geschreven. Helaas was de "launch" van de dag, een Atlas V raket (AV-018), voor ons ietwat te laat op de namiddag gescheduled. Milledjuu !!!

2500km na ons vertrek in Rockville, arriveren we enigzins opgelucht in het pittoreske en haast magische Key West. Het is er bijzonder kalm (mid-weeks), het weer is schitterend (... een dagelijks obligate, hevige wolkbreuk niet te na gesproken) en de ambiance is cool & relax. Wat kan een mens zich meer wensen ?? De keuze is dan ook snel gemaakt om er 3 "volle" dagen te verblijven. We bezoeken o.a. de stulpjes van Ernest Hemingway en Harry S. Truman en genieten mateloos van de lokale culinaire geneugdes. La dolce vita in het kwadraat, olé !!!!

Aan alle mooie liedjes komt helaas een einde en het is dan ook keizwaar tegen ons gedacht dat we op 12 Sep de terugtocht, gespreid over 2 dagen, moeten aanvatten. Miami Beach kunnen we echter niet zomaar voorbij vlammen zonder er de vermaarde art deco buurt eerst te gaan verkennen. Je voelt aan alle lichaamsuiteinden dat er een zeer hoge "jetset" concentratie (en de pseudo versie ervan) heerst. Zowaar, te vergelijken met "à la Knock-le-Zoute for Dummies" ☺

Het heeft wat overredingskracht gevergd (blijven zagen, dus ...) maar ook Daytona Beach en vooral, de Daytona 500 Experience hebben ons tijdens een laatste pitsstop getoond dat het wel heus de moeite is om er een blik te werpen op de rijke racegeschiedenis, de waanzinnig populaire race legendes (the Petty family) en vooral, de NASCAR racepower en het fabuleuze circuit (of, beter gezegd, de speedway). Vrooooooom, en nu naar huis ... (eindstand km-teller : 4.500 !!).

The FLORIDA trip (part 2)

Het Naval Station Mayport (Florida) was de volgende halte waar we de nacht zouden doorbrengen, de Navy Lodge ligt er enig mooi aan de oceaan. Onderweg gingen we echter eerst de milde zeelucht even opsnuiven in Fernandina Beach, de NO hoek van Florida. Deze badplaats wordt vooral bezocht door de lokale yanks, geen massatoerisme en dus best leuk om er tot rust te komen (yep, de vele miles begonnen stilaan hun tol te eisen ...).

Niet zo ver er vandaan ligt Jacksonville, de grootste stad van Florida (en wellicht ook de meest ongezellige). Gelukkig was het zondag toen we er passeerden en het leek wel of iedereen er gevlucht was. Aan de "Waterfront" zien we het standbeeld van Andrew Jackson (de 7de US president) en krijgen we toch een aardig beeld van de 500km lange St. Johns River.

Een boogscheut er vandaan ligt het wondermooie en zeer populaire St. Augustine. Een Spaanse Admiraal zette er voet aan wal in 1565 en een jaar later is er het eerste kind van Europese afkomst geboren in wat nu bekend is als de "Continental USA". Het "Ponce de Leon Hotel", thans het Flagler College en het "Alcazar Hotel", thans het Lightner Museum zijn schitterende landmarks die het stadsbeeld op een indrukwekkende manier domineren. We hebben volop genoten van deze ... Europese stad.
