Power outages ... a too frequent phenomenon

We encounter repeatedly power outages in our house (and in the area), which is very inconvenient (and even frustrating when stuff is starting to defrost in the freezer). Restoration efforts can sometimes take several days to complete if the damage is widespread.
There are many causes for power interruptions - some preventable and some not. The most common causes are : lightning, high winds, equipment failure and overgrown trees. The fact that most of the electrical wiring still is over ground level, is, of course, not in favour of ... It seems curious to us.
