Cycling a part of the C&O Canal
On saterday morning (Oct 6th) we joined the rest of the guys in Shepherdstown and started the C&O Canal cycling tour. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, occasionally referred to as the "Grand Old Ditch," operated from 1836 until 1924 parallel to the Potomac River in Maryland from Cumberland, Maryland to Washington, DC. The total length of the canal is about 184.5 miles (300 km). The trail (mainly in gravel !) presses the border of the canal on the Maryland/West-Virginia frontier. The unspoiled environment is really spectacular and unique. After 115 km we arrive in Little Orleans (at Bills Place ...). The next day (about 30 degr. C !!) we cycled from Little Orleans to Cumberland (75 km). It was an incredible experience, a true epic journey !
